Smithtown FD-Fire at the Elks Lodge on Edgewood Avenue

February 8, 1994 Fire reported at 2341 hours. The Elks Lodge is located at 120 Edgewood Avenue. Units arrived to find a fire in the building with 3 people trapped in the apartments above. A 20 year old woman was rescued by John Lussa nad Larry Coleman using the aerial ladder at a front window. Eric Whitehead and Mike Sammartano used a ground ladder to rescue a 12 year old boy and a 20 year old male from a rear window. All of the victims were transported via ambulance with smoke inhalation. Kings Park (ladder), St James (standby at SFD), Nesconset (engine and ladder) Commack (engine) and Nissequogue to the scene. Hauppauge also sent a unit to standby at Smithtown FD HQ. Fire placed under control within 2.5 hours. One firefighter sustained a head injury. Fire started in the basement and did substantial damage. Photos in 2-17-1994 Smithtown News.
