March 10, 2021 0628 hours. The Northport Fire Department received a call for a reported structure fire at 65 Laurel Avenue. Arriving units encountered a smoke condition. Upon further investigation heavy fire load was discovered in the basement. Chief Sheridan, notified dispatch to retransmit the alarm as a working building fire. 1st Asst Chief Pyne attempted to hold back the fire with a fire extinguisher (water can). 2nd Asst Chief Smalling managed placement of arriving apparatus. Northport PD assisted with scene safety and traffic control. Engine 298, Tower Ladder 297, Engine 296, Heavy Rescue 2910 and Ambulance 295 responded to the scene. Two hand lines were stretched to the rear entry to the basement. Crews from Tower Ladder 297 handled ventilation. Mutual aid for a RIT crew to the scene was requested from East Northport FD, standby Engine from Centerport FD to headquarters and Ambulance standby to headquarters from Kings Park FD. No injuries were reported. The fire was quickly brought under control. The fire is under investigation by the Northport Village Fire Marshal, Northport PD and Suffolk County PD Arson Unit.
