March 23, 1974. Dwyer was a police officer in Suffolk for 24 years. He died at St. Johns Hospital after suffering a stroke. Dwyer joined the Smithtown Police Department, then a 15 man force, on January 1, 1950. In March of 1959, he was promoted to detective. Dwyer helped organize the Detectives Association after the formation of the County Police Department and was elected President of the Suffolk County Police Conference in 1962 and 1963.
Harry transferred to the Marine Bureau in 1961 and served on the “Charlie” boat which covered waters around Smithtown (note: this police marine sector no longer exists) and then transferred to the “Delta” boat in Port Jefferson.
Dwyer enjoyed many sports and hobbies, including skin diving, photography, ham radio, flying, softball and at one time, semi pro football. He was also known for his fine voice, and for a while, he sang professionally over WALK radio in Patchogue.
In 1975, A Sportsmanship Trophy given in Harry’s memory by Engine Company 3 of the St. James Fire Department and donated to the Suffolk County Police Athletic League Football Division, was presented to the North Babylon Patriots by his wife Rosemary Dwyer, who with their four children were guests at the 1st annual PAL luncheon held at the Colonie Hill in Hauppauge.
