March 4, 1908 The organizational meeting was held on this date in 1908 and the name Smithtown Volunteer Hook and Ladder Company was adopted. All of the proposed officers (see 2-26-08) were elected. Frank w. Smith agreeing to accept Second Assistant Foreman when John Holm Jr declined. The questions of purchasing apparatus and locating the firehouse were discussed and it was reported that John S. Hunting had offered a strip of land on Bellmeade Ave which he would donate as long as it was to be used for fire purposes. The site was accepted and a lease negotiated. At this same time a Committee was appointed to solicit funds for apparatus and a building; John Holm Sr. donated a steel tower for a bell; and it was noted that the Bayport Fire Department had a hook and ladder for sale fo $100. Last but not least, the first equipment for the newly organized department was purchased: One dozen pointed shovels.
