February 28, 1939 George Smith, 84, died as a result of burns he received when fire broke out in a room he was occupying in one of the dwellings on the Wyandanch Gun Club property, Jericho Turnpike. His sister Ella B. Smith, 74 made an attempt to extinguish the flames with a bucket of water. The Smithtown Fire Department responded and confined the fire to the victims room.
