February 24, 1974 T. Edward Ellis, charter member of the St. James FD , was awarded the Fire News Trophy for outstanding service for being the 2nd eldest active fireman on hand at the Long Island Arena on “Lifesavers Day”. Mr. Ellis, 87 years old, has served the St. James community for 65 years as an active firefighter since 1909 when the inhabitants of St. James saw the need for fire protection and organized the Eagle Hook and Ladder Company. Theodore Haussler, unable to arttend, five month syounger than Mr. Ellis, was a close runner up. He too is a charter member of the St. James FD and also received the award.George Frevert of the Lindenhurst FD, age 90, was recognized as being the oldest active fireman.
This was the first annual Lifesavers Day to honor Long Island Senior firemen. The event was made possible through the Long Island Cougars Hockey team in conjunction with Fire News, a newspaper for Long Island Volunteer firemen, published by Jeb Ladouceur of Smithtown.
