January 21, 1986 Fire reported to Smithtown FD at approximately 1030 AM. This started as a basment fire. Due to the hazards, including the storage of chemicals, and progression of the fire, crews could not safely enter the building to fight the fire. an exterior attack was mounted using aerials from Hauppauge, Smithtown and Kings Park. Numerous large caliber handlines were also deployed. Two firefighters were injured. Foam was also used to try and extinguish the fire. The ground level floor collapsed into the basement about an hour into the fire. St. James, Commack and Nissequogue FDs also operated. Fire was extinguished over 3 hours later, when the basement was filled with water. The fire also caused damage to the Smithtown Haus Restaurant and to the Lighting by Iron Mart and to the Frame Center. Fire was blamed on a faulty electrical box in the basement.
