July 20, 2021 0905 hours. The Springs Fire Department is alerted to a house on fire at 498 Springs-fireplace Road. Firefighters arrive and encounter fire in the basement of a two story private dwelling. The occupants had safely evacuated prior to the arrival of the fire department. According to Springs Chief of Department Tim Taylor, firefighters waited for PSEG to respond and de-energize the structure before they entered and extinguished the fire as the electrical meter itself was on fire.
Springs FD operated with two engines, their tanker and their ambulances. Amagansett FD sent a tanker, East Hampton sent an engine and a tanker and Sag Harbor FD sent a RIT. The Montauk Fire Department sent an engine to cover for the duration of the incident. The East Hampton Town Fire Marshal handled the investigation and determined that a treadmill was the cause of the fire. Michael Heller Photo.
