Shelter Island FD-house fire on Smith Street

October 21, 2021 1945 hours. The Shelter Island Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a house fire at 13 Smith Street. Units arrive to find fire on the exterior of an occupied single story residence. Two occupants had already evacuated and were uninjured. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing any extension into the structure. The exterior of the home and an attached deck on the east side were damaged. Shelter Island Police determined that this was an accidental fire, a result of improper disposal of smoking materials. There were no injuries.
