Smithtown FD-Fire guts two stores on Main Street

January 15, 1970 Fire engulfs two stores in the area of 47 East Main Street. Fire reported just after 1400 hours at a glass and mirror store, spreading to a decoration store next door. Hauppauge, Nesconset, Setauket(according to the paper), St. James and Kings Park Fire Departments send units to the scene. Both stores were gutted. Fire placed under control within 2 hours. The stores were on the east side of the Smithtown Appliance Store. Law offices of Schecter and Schecter and the former quarters of Wood, Walker & Co were also damaged. A unit from Kings Park FD that was responding to this fire was involved in a crash with another vehicle. That vehicle was being operated by a crossing guard.
This was the 2nd fire on Main Street in the past month.
