January 5, 1964 0700 hours. Firefighters from the Smithtown, Commack, Kings Park and St. James Fire Departments joined Hauppauge firefighters at a drill where the former elementary school was burned to the ground to clear the property. The building, which was located on the corner of Veterans Highway and Route 111 (where the 5 Guys shopping center is now), was constructed in 1912 and had been vacant since 1950. Chief of Department was Frederick Lanceley.
