April 22, 2021 1235 hours. Huntington Manor firefighters were dispatched to a report of a house fire with a person trapped at 52 residence on Oak Avenue in Huntington Station. First Assistant Chief James Glidden, Huntington Manor Ex Chief John Glidden and Ex Chief of The Port Washington Fire Department Bryan Vogeley (a neighborhood resident) arrived simultaneously on the scene. Chief Glidden notified dispatch of a working fire with a resident attempting to exit a second floor window with smoke also coming from the window. While Chief Glidden donned his firefighting gear for a possible rescue, Ex Chief Glidden and a Suffolk County Police Officer attempted to enter the dwelling but were driven back by high heat and a heavy smoke condition. Ex Chief Vogeley was able to locate an extension ladder in the back yard of the home and quicky placed it at the porch roof which was located below the window. Ex Chief Vogeley climbed the ladder followed by Ex Chief Glidden and they able to remove the victim from the window. He was placed in a stokes basket and treated with oxygen and kept warm in a blanket by both firefighters as they secured the victim in the basket. Firefighters from Engine 3 arrived and were able to quickly knock down the fire. The victim was then lowered to the ground where he was transferred to members of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad for treatment. He was taken to Huntington Hospital and later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital for further treatment. Chief of Department Chuck Brady who was in charge of operations and commended all involved in todays rescue. “Without their quick actions, there could of been a very different outcome” Chief Brady said. He would also like to thank the Greenlawn, Huntington and Melville Fire Department for their assistance along with the Huntington Community First Aid Squad.
