A 16 year old Smithtown High School girl was charged with first degree murder in District Court for the fatal shooting of her father. The girl, Diane Waters, was ordered held without bail by District Court Judge Frank P. De Luca. A hearing was set for February 21st at 9:30AM. Detectives from the County Police Homicide Squad said the girl fired two rifle slugs into her father, Ernest Waters, 38, a postal worker. The shooting occurred yesterday in the master bedroom of the Water’s home at 738 Meadow Road in Smithtown after an early morning argument between the girl and her father. The detectives said Miss Waters and her father have argued often in recent weeks over the care of animals in a barn behind the house and other household chores that she was required to do. The police said that Mr. Waters was killed instantly as one bullet hit him in the head and the other in the chest. A younger brother, Calvin 13, heard the shots and a few minutes later the girl called her mother, Mrs. Florence Waters, a nurse at Kings Park State Hospital. After several hours, Mrs. Waters called a lawyer, who advised her to notify the police. The police were called at 3PM and the girl was arraigned 4 hours later. From the NY Times:
