Smithtown-Murder Suicide on Howard Court

The bodies of a 55 year old anesthesiologist and his wife were found yesterday at the couples house-his slumped body in the back seat of an idling car, hers lying on a bed in a room on the second floor. Police said it appeared to be a murder-suicide.
Police said drugs and drug related implements were found in the house and based on that evidence, they are investigating the possibility that Dr. Francesco Pini injected his 50-year-old wife Mary with a lethal drug, then took his own life by running his car in a closed garage and inhaling the carbon monoxide fumes.
Police said the bodies were found at 10AM in the Pini house at 7 Howard Court-about two hours after the doctor didn’t show up for scheduled surgery at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. The body of Pini’s 50 year old wife Mary, appeared to have been injected with a lethal drug police said.
Det. Sgt Kenneth McGuire of the Suffolk Homicide squad said a hand-written, three page note by Pini was found on the kitchen table downstairs. he said it was unlikely that the injection marks found on Mrs. Pini’s body were self inflicted.
Autopsies on both bodies are to be performed today.
Police would not disclose the letters contents, but McGuire said: “It was a rambling type of note with a certain air of depression…There’s a lot of information in the note. It gives us pretty much of an idea what happened…We certainly cannot rule out a murder-suicide.”
