February 11, 1994 Mother and son were attempting to brace an awning on their house after a 15 inch snowfall. The awning collapsed on them. 16 year old Brian was able to get out and call for help. FD personnel used air bags and other equipment to free Jean Harney 52. The rescue took approximately 20 minutes. Both subjects were transported via ambulance to St. Johns Hospital. Chief Roy Starke estimated that there was approximately 1 ton of snow on top of the subjects and credits 3 Highway Department workers who saw the incident occur and stopped to start digging them out, with helping save their lives. Chief Starks letter to the editor is in the 3-10-1994 Smithtown News.
