January 22, 1948 The community was shocked to learn of the tragic deaths of two small boys who were drowned this afternoon in the snow and ice covered brook near Harrison’s Pond in San Remo. The bodies of Frank Vita, 6, and Leonard Brock, 6, both of San Remo, were recovered following their discovery by William Olivari of Riviera Drive. Mr. Olivari found their sled and upon investigation, saw the body of the Vita boy floating in the water. In attempting to recover the body, Mr. Olivari himself fell in and was in turn rescued by Edward Bisch of St. Johnland Road, who was passing at the time and saw Mr. Olivari;s struggles. Mr. Bisch notified the police. Sgt. Borden, Sgt Anderson and Patrolman Baker, assisted by members of the Smithtown Emergency Squad, recovered the bodies. The Vita boy was taken to Kings Park Hospital where all efforts to revive him failed. The Brock boy was removed to a nearby home, where all efforts to revive him also failed. A joint funeral was held for the boys and interment took place at Pinelawn Cemetary. 1-29-1948 Smithtown News.
