Nesconset FD-Ex Chief Anthony Sprofera passes

January 22, 1988 Anthony G. Sprofera, 79, the first chief of the Nesconset FireDepartment and a volunteer there for 52 years, died today of heart failure at Community Hospital of Western Suffolk. Mr. Sprofera, who lived in Nesconset from the age of 5 on, worked as a plumber and handyman. In 1935, he helped found the Nesconset Fire Department, becoming its first chief and one of its first commissioners. He also was captain of the department’s fire police squad for 47 years. He served as an Army private in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Antoinette, and a brother, Peter, of Nesconset.Mass, 9:45 a.m. today at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Smithtown; burial, St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Hauppauge.
