Gas station attendant robbed and killed in Commack

January 22, 1993 SMITHTOWN An assault on a gas station attendant early Friday turned into murder yesterday when the 42-year-old Hauppauge man died.

Nusrat Iqbal died at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Smithtown at 10:58 a.m. of injuries he suffered during a robbery at the Shell gas station on Commack Road in Commack, where he was a night attendant.

Iqbal, whose skull was fractured in the attack, suffered a hemorrhage in the brain, a hospital spokeswoman said yesterday. He was on a ventilator at the time of his death.

Iqbal, who had worked at the station for three weeks, went to pump gas and was jumped, the station owner, Tom Campbell, said. The attack occurred between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Friday during a robbery.
