January 11, 1925 2200 hours. From the Port Jefferson Echo 1-15-1925:
A very serious and fatal fire in St. James Sunday night caused the death of two children and injured two others. At 10PM, the St. James Fire Co was called to extinguish a chimney fire in the house owned by George Schmal, on Southern Blvd, and while working on that fire, the siren called them to a fire on Cambon Ave near the Middle Country Road. The house is occupied by a colored family by the name of Edward McKay. At the time of the fire, the father was visiting relatives in Newark, NJ.
When the firemen reached the scene of the fire the entire building was a mass of flames. It had advanced too far for them to do anything with it.
There were three children in the house staying with their grandmother. The grandmother jumped from the porch roof, taking one of the children with her. They were both badly hurt and had to be removed to the sanitarium at Ronkonkoma. The other two children, a girl about 6 years old and a boy about 4 years old, were burned to death. The direct cause of the fire has not yet been learned, but several articles which might have been part of a still were found. Mutual aid was provided from the Smithtown Fire Department.
