November 6, 2018 \u00a01215 hours. Suffolk Police and the Ronkonkoma and Lakeland Fire Departments were dispatched to a traffic collision on the westbound side of the Long Island Expressway. Units arrived to find a crash involving a box truck and a passenger vehicle. The truck had left the roadway, striking the Ocean Avenue overpass. The lone occupant of the truck was deceased in the vehicle. Crews stabilized the vehicles and requested the Town of Islip Haz-Mat team as well as NYS Encon Police and NYS Encon Spill Response, due to a large fuel spill from the truck. The operator of the other\u00a0vehicle was uninjured. \u00a0The westbound side of the expressway was closed for almost 8 hours for the investigation and while haz-mat worked to contain and mitigate the fuel spill. \u00a0Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating From SCPD Press Release: John Palmer was operating a 2014 Freightliner Truck westbound when it collided with a 2006 Kia Sportage being operated by Brendan Appold.
